Place Your Bets

Right now, I bet you’re scrambling.  

 

As a Leader, you’re working like a fiend to close out your Team’s commitments for 2024.  Year-end financial close is around the corner.  You’re likely sprinting towards 2024’s finish line and the promise of some well-deserved days off at year’s end.

 

While it's important to close out the year well, it’s also important to consider where you want to invest in your Team next year.  Knowing dollars for such investment are finite, where do you want to place your bets to drive the best outcomes?

 

Some things to consider:

 

For the individuals on your team, who are the people who consistently deliver, your star players?  How do you best “re-recruit” them, ensuring they know you want them on the team and in the organization for the long haul?

 

By definition, not everybody is above average.  But for high performers, this is a time to reflect whether you know their ambitions (if you don’t, ask) and to understand what they need to continue to develop.

 

Maybe it's training to hone a particular skill.  Maybe it's a broadening assignment into another department.  You might also see an opportunity to hire a Coach to work in a concentrated manner on skill gaps you or they perceive hold them back.  

 

Then, for the team as a whole, what do your internal and external customers say about performance?  Where does your team delight and where do they frustrate customers?

 

Are there gaps in their competencies which could be closed by targeted team training?  Perhaps they struggle with driving change or managing conflict.  Or maybe, you need to invest in getting underneath how they see you, how they believe you need to upskill.

 

If you Lead other Leaders, perhaps they collectively lack the Leadership skills and capabilities to collaborate and outperform as a Leadership Team.  

 

Or maybe your strategy has gone stale. Has your culture plateaued?  Does it need a revitalizing kick in the pants?

 

The point is this:  

 

2025 will bring new challenges.  Ensuring you have the right people working on the right things and in the right manner is crucial.  After all, most days, the Leader with the best People and the best Team wins.
