Habit and Ritual
May 03, 2023On habit, ritual and things which go bump in the night…
Habits and rituals are useful mental shortcuts: filters helping us cope with the daily deluge of data modern life dumps over us, conserving and focusing our limited, precious brain power for things like “growth” and, well, survival.
They can be helpful conditioned responses to repetitive but important tasks (brushing our teeth, exercising, avoiding bears), or to circumstances when it's hard to think clearly (rituals guiding us through the grief and trauma of a loved one’s death).
Of course, taking too many mental shortcuts can mean we’re on auto-pilot, no longer seeing the evolving world around us, oblivious to opportunity and risk. In short, mailing it in.
That’s no way to live or to lead.
And so it can be with the work of our teams:
-
We continue to have meetings a certain way. Why? Because we’ve always done so.
-
We have a static view of our clients and their needs. Why? Because this view might have worked once.
-
We have a fixed way of creating and delivering value. Why? Because from the beginning of time “this” is how we’ve done it.
-
We’ve become lazy and fixed in our mindset. We miss the chance to innovate.
-
We don’t see the competitor gaining ground. We are oblivious to the wolf at the door.
-
We get our a$$es kicked. We wonder, “how did that happen?”
We need to wake up.
Leadership Coaching can be about one-to-one engagements between Client and Coach, working on challenges of the individual.
It can also be about bringing a team together to work through where they are on the trail to collective high performance and where they are just stuck in the mud.
From time-to-time, leaders and teams need a chance to challenge the norms, the patterns and practices of how they are leading and working together.
They need the time and space to think, to fight, to dream together and rewrite the old playbook to fit their current circumstance.
The leader here needs to be confident and secure: open to challenge.
The team needs to be mature and solid, so that members can challenge, unafraid of repercussions.
In this process, the team has the opportunity to emerge with new purpose and vision, having cleared from the attic of the musty old relics which were holding them back.
