Congratulations, You're a LEADER! Now what??
Dec 03, 2024
So, congratulations!
You’ve just gotten your first leadership role and you’re meeting your new team for the first time.
And there you are, looking into their expectant faces, it hits you: sweet heavens, I’m in charge. Now what?
Helping people answer the “now what?” question is an important part of my Coaching and Consulting practice and the reason why I’ve written this eBook.
As a new leader, you’ve got loads of stuff to learn about your new team and about yourself.
You’re no longer an individual contributor. You’re now charged with getting meaningful work done through others. Expectations are high. And often, so are anxieties. Failure is a possibility.
The clock is already ticking. People are asking for your plans priorities. You’re trying to work out what’s going well and what is on fire right now, requiring your immediate action? Where to begin?
In these moments of stress, structure and a disciplined approach to asking questions and solving problems are your friends. In my book, I provide a structure aligned to six important topics for Leaders new to a role to get their arms around. They are:
1) Team & People: do you have the right people doing the right things in the right way to create value?
2) Customers: who are the Internal/external consumers of your Team’s work and what do they think about your Team?
3) Market: how do you and your Team fit into the broader external environment where threats and opportunities live?
4) Systems & Process: does the internal connective tissue of your organization facilitate or impede effective delivery of value to Customers?
5) Regulatory & Compliance: what are the legal/regulatory “red lines” which you MUST respect?
6) Culture: do you understand the aspirational and lived set of actions, values and beliefs which frame the context of work of the broader organization you are a part of?
Diving headfirst into these categories on Day 1 will help you work out where the team is winning and where your personal Leadership is immediately required to get the team back on track.
You will find the book on my website at https://www.coaching4executives.com/ebook-yourfirst100days .
Of course, if you’d like to discuss directly with me your First 100 Days in a role, or any other topic, I’m happy for you to schedule a complimentary, no-obligation Exploration Session with me.
Wishing you good fortune in your Leadership Journey!
